Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

A. Preventive Measures

1. SARS Emergency Team :

    A "SARS Emergency Team" has been formed to initiate and deploy Preventive Measures, Surveillance Systems and Contingency Plans.

2. Sterilization and Hygiene:

    a. Factory floors and office facilities, including elevator buttons and door handles etc. will be sterilized on a regular basis.
    b. Company drivers will wear facemask and sterilize the cars on a daily basis.
    c. Liquid soap is made available in washrooms

3. Travel Restriction of Staff :

    a. Restrict the travel of staff to high-risk areas (currently identified: Guangzhou and Beijing). The SARS Emergency Team will closely monitor the spreading of SARS in other areas. Approval from top management is required if travel to the identified areas are absolutely necessary.
    b. Personal leave of over one day is not allowed until further notice.
    c. Factory dormitory will not permit outsiders for visits or accommodations until further notice.

4. Internal Awareness :

    Propagandistic posters are densely pasted for these emphasizes:
    a. Keeping good fresh air ventilation.
    b. Maintaining good personal hygiene (frequent hand washing and laundry etc.).
    c. Staying healthy (ample sleep, regular exercise, balanced diet and no-smoking etc.).
    d. Staying away from crowded places.
    e. Strengthening personal immunity (more water, fruits and vitamin C).
    f. Early diagnosis when having symptoms (fever, chills, coughing, body ache and malaise)
    g. Avoiding visits to hospitals.
    h. Updated news on the development of SARS in China.

5. Reception of Visitors :
    a. Facemask is made available for visitors at factory's points of entry.
    b. On-site overnight visitors will be served with private meeting room, commuting car, washroom, protective items and canteen.
    c. Sterilizers, thermometer and facemasks are made available at the Meeting Centre.
    d. Meeting rooms will be sterilized after each meeting.

B. Surveillance Systems

1. Daily Measurement of Body Temperature :

    Infrared thermometers will be used to measure the body temperature of each staff on a daily basis. Anyone with temperature of over 38º C will be sent to Daning People's Hospital (the designated hospital) for immediate diagnosis.

2. Daily Reporting :

    All departments should report to the Administrative Department the number of staff who has any symptoms of flu, fever, cough or respiratory infection on a daily basis.

3. Cross Surveillance :

    Staff should observe their roommates for any symptoms of flu, fever, cough or respiratory infection. Anyone with the above symptoms would be sent to the factory clinic at once.

C. Contingency Plans

1. Handling of Suspected Patient :

    Factory manager will send the suspected staff patient with SARS symptoms to the designated hospital. All escorts must put on protective body suits.

2. Evacuation and Isolation :

    a. Three days' evacuation for the work floor and the dormitory of the infected staff for thorough disinfection.
    b. Thorough disinfection of the factory clinic.
    c. Quarantine the staff that had close contact with the patient for the next ten days.

3. Reporting and Reacting :

    SARS Emergency Team would submit a written report to the top management and to all concerned customers. Meetings for follow-up measures will be held on a daily basis.

4. Others :

    a. Facemask is enforced for all staff.
    b. Prompt and proper internal notification.
